Thank you for sharing your experience, I can relate on many levels. Your vulnerability makes me feel understood-especially going to bed and hoping the raft floats ashore. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to bed with the hope that somehow I'll feel better in the morning. Thanks again :)

Thank you, Ashley. I’m sorry you’ve been through this too, but glad my words can help us both feel less alone in it.

I’m excited to discover your new Substack! I am not a grower of plants, but I am a huge nature geek. And I’m also a former teacher (though I barely lasted two years in the public schools), so I’m interested to read about how your career has evolved. I’m so happy to meet you here!

By the way, I love the story on your website about the student you impacted. Those are the best moments of teaching, even when they are the hardest.

Happy to meet you too! Although I don't miss my teaching career, it taught me more about the human experience that I could have ever imagined. Can't wait to read more of your writing :)

This was such a beautiful and visceral description. Vulnerable and so true. I've struggled with anxiety, panic, and depression over time and while it all feels differently (depending on the thing, what's happening, etc.) it is multi-layered and hard to describe. You've done an amazing job of capturing this flavor. I hope you float like a buoy until you are feeling better.

Thank you so much, Paula! That’s the beauty of writing, isn’t it, is to take something as nebulous as a feeling and bring it to life through metaphor and images. I didn’t know what I was going to discover about my depression until I started typing. I’m glad to hear it resonated with you!

In no particular order..

I am old enough to see the finish line and much remains undone.

A long tumultuous relationship that is fading away as things do.

I miss my longtime crutch that I gave up a year and a half ago..cocktail hour(s).

The words are written by someone who knows these things as well or better than I do, and so young. Tic-Toc.

Even at 43, I have a 30-year history with this darkness. So yeah, I get it. And I also believe it’s never too late. It sounds like you are moving things in a direction that feels right for you. So, what’s on the bucket list?
